The Course
The following is a description of the 2010 Unnamed Epic course and is for reference only. While much of the course will remain the same in 2011, there will be some improvements with the incorporation of new terrain and additional off-road sections. The official 2011 Unnamed Epic Course will be announced in the near future.
The start in Mineral Point will be on Shake Rag Street in front of the State Historical Society's Pendarvis miner's cottages restoration. There will be a controlled roll out into town. The race will open up as riders hit the 14% slope on High Street. At the top of the ridge the course will jog south a block and return to the valley bottom via Fountain and Commerce streets. Riding south of town racers will turn onto the Cheese Country rail-trail heading back to Shake Rag Street at about four miles where riders can expect their first off-road terrain challenges.
A thirteen mile stretch will be composed of mainly hilly on road riding with some off road sections and take the race into Governor Dodge State Park. In Governor Dodge State Park the course will use a variety of off-road trails and very steep grades can be expected. Leaving the park riders will go east on the limestone surfaced Military Ridge State Trail. From the trail there will be a steep climb up into Blue Mounds State park where the race will finish off with a mix of rolling double track and super tight technical single track.
The Unnamed Epic is a mountain bike race and such bikes should be ridden throughout. Tire choices will be up to the individual keeping in mind the variety of surfaces that will be encountered. Surfaces will be primarily turf or hardpack track along with paved surface, rocks, roots and some soft surface.
The race will proceed as scheduled under most weather and trail conditions. August tends to be a dry month in this region. A committee will be in place to make a final judgment on the weather as far in advance as possible. Primary concerns will be extremely wet trail conditions that might do significant damage. We intend to create a sustainable course that can be used year after year. Severe storms on race day would be another. We will pass through Barneveld, site of the 1984 force 5 tornado.
