About the Epic
The toughest terrain in Wisconsin was just begging for an epic mountain bike event. Chosen for the venues for road cycling and mountain biking courses for Chicago's 2016 Olympics bid, the driftless ridges and valleys west of Madison can dish out the level of difficulty to challenge the finest cyclists in the world.
Team Sports chose to offer this experience to any fit rider in the form of an "epic" mountain bike race. Races in that category have captured the enthusiasm of riders around the world. As such, our "epic" combines long distance, steep terrain, various riding surfaces and technical difficulty in a point-to-point ten-hour challenge for solo riders or two-person teams.
We chose the historic town of Mineral Point for the start and the highest point in southern Wisconsin at Blue Mound State Park as the finish. The 75-mile course includes connecting road and snowmobile trail segments, trails in Governor Dodge State Park, the Military Ridge State Trail, and trails in Brigham County Park. Elevation gained is well over one mile and challenges are encountered from beginning to end. Pre and post race exhibits, food and fun are all part of the package.
A testament to the course’s level of difficulty, just 153 athletes, or 61% of the starting field, finished the point-to-point Unnamed Epic in 2010, its inaugural year. Top overall honors went to Pat Lemieux (Texas Roadhouse) of Minnesota, who crossed the line in 4:48, 4 hours and 11 minutes earlier than the day’s last place finisher. In at 6:29, Lindsey Kriete (Team GEARGRINDER) donned the winning female jersey, with Tommy Matush and Dave Jabo (Café Hollander) claiming the coveted gold star trophy for first two-man team.
